Maria Militsi

Maria Militsi was born in Greece. Since she recieved her Master of Fine Arts 2008 from Royal College Of Art in UK, she works as a jewellery artist in London.

About her work, she says:
"The power of absence that makes us look, the dimension of the lack and the space left by a missing object are ideas that signify my own work. In an attempt to absorb what already exists rather than adding to the world, I collect objects that have suffered a loss; the loss of their owner or the loss of their function triggers a desire to complete them, to reassess their function and to fill their empty space with precious metals. From a jeweller`s point of view these elements of absence and incompleteness that supposedly reduce the object's value, turn out to be a point of departure. The hidden geography of a found object becomes a mould that shapes enigmatic forms of jewellery. Looking discerningly at the discarded, the overlooked and the odd, I intend to challenge the conditions for revival and to give the objects a new lease of life. By suggesting a world based on dissimilarities I aim to bridge the accidental with the intentional, the mistaken with the precise and the experienced (old) with the innocent (new). As an outcome these fragmented occurrences paradoxicalize the ordinary and set up scenarios about recovery, story telling, strangeness and human engagement."
